    17,2km

    350m

    350m

This moderate hike, the Tintagel Castle loop from Boscastle, offers a challenging yet rewarding experience along Cornwall's dramatic coastline. You will cover 10.7 miles (17.2 km) with 1138 feet (347 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 4 hours and 48 minutes to complete. Expect diverse and demanding terrain, including uneven cliff paths, steep ascents and descents, and some sections of road walking, all while enjoying panoramic coastal views from headlands like Barras Nose.

Starting from the picturesque Boscastle Harbour, this route takes you through varied landscapes. The trail can be narrow in places, especially along the high sea cliffs, and sections like the Rocky Valley are particularly challenging with steep descents and ascents that can be muddy after rain. Sure-footedness and good fitness are recommended for this adventure.

The route is steeped in history and folklore, most famously its connections to the legend of King Arthur and Merlin. You will encounter the iconic ruins of Tintagel Castle, perched dramatically on 300-foot-high cliffs, and can spot Merlin's Cave beneath the castle at low tide. The trail also features the ancient labyrinthine carvings in Rocky Valley and forms part of the renowned South West Coast Path, highlighting its significance.

This easy 3.7-mile (6.0 km) hike from Boscastle offers a diverse journey, blending dramatic coastal scenery with peaceful woodland and riverside paths. You will gain about 498 feet (152 metres) in elevation over approximately 1 hour and 43 minutes. The route takes you past the medieval harbour, along rugged cliffs with views of the Meachard island, and up to Willapark Lookout for expansive vistas. Inland, the trail follows the meandering Valency River through Minster Woods, where you can find bluebells and wild garlic in spring, and enjoy secluded paths. While mostly accessible, expect mixed terrain with steps, stiles, and some short but steep ascents, especially on the coastal sections.

Starting and ending in the picturesque village of Boscastle, this loop is suitable for various fitness levels. The trail is rated as easy, though the coastal climbs require a reasonable level of fitness. If you wish to shorten your walk, you have the option to do so at Minster Church by crossing stepping stones over the river and following a valley path back to Boscastle. This allows you to tailor the experience to your preference and time available.

Along the way, you will encounter several notable features, including the whitewashed Willapark Lookout tower, which has served various purposes since the early 19th century and now functions as a Coastguard station. The headland itself is also home to an Iron Age cliff castle. Further inland, you can observe the rare Forrabury Stitches, a medieval farming system with distinctive long, curving strips. The historic Minster Church, dating back to the 12th century, is nestled within the tranquil Valency Valley, adding to the rich cultural tapestry of this Cornish route.
