Cime de l'Agnellière

The Cime de l'Agnellière stands at an impressive altitude of 2,703 meters (8,868 feet) above sea level. It is a prominent peak within the Mercantour-Argentera massif.

While the area is a classic spot for experienced ski tourers and backcountry skiing in winter and spring, a winter hike to the summit is generally not recommended due to challenging conditions, deep snow, and avalanche risk. A common approach from the Refuge de la Madone de Fenestre can take anywhere from 6 to 9 hours round trip, covering a substantial distance and elevation gain. It's a full-day endeavor for most experienced hikers.

No specific permits are required for hiking Cime de l'Agnellière itself. However, as it is located within the Mercantour National Park, visitors are expected to respect park regulations, which include rules regarding camping, fires, waste, and protection of flora and fauna.

If you're looking for other challenging hikes with spectacular views in the Mercantour, consider routes to the Cime du Gélas (the highest peak in the massif) or the Mont Clapier. For slightly less strenuous but still rewarding options, the trails around the Lac de Trécolpas or the Pas des Ladres offer stunning alpine scenery and panoramic vistas without necessarily reaching a high summit.

For hikers, the Refuge de la Madone de Fenestre is an excellent option, offering dormitory-style accommodation and meals, making it a convenient base for early starts. Alternatively, the village of Saint-Martin-Vésubie, located further down the valley, provides a range of hotels, guesthouses, and holiday rentals.

Weather on Cime de l'Agnellière can be highly variable and change rapidly, even in summer. Expect strong winds, sudden temperature drops, and potential for thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon.
