    Die Nachbarschaft ’DUMBO - Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass’, ursprünglich ein Industrie- und Gewerbegebiet im Stadtteil Brooklyn, wandelte hat sich mit der Deindustrialisierung der Stadt, Ende der 1970er Jahre in ein Wohnviertel, wo viele Künstler ihre großen preiswerten Studios und Wohnungen hatten.
    Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde die Nachbarschaft in Brooklyn zunehmend gentrifiziert, da Wohnungen in Manhattan immer teurer wurden. In den umgebauten Lagergebäuden entstanden Boutiquen, Restaurants und Cafés. Der Eintrag der Nachbarschaft ins ’National Register of Historic Places‘ im Jahr 2000 hat eine positive Entwicklung der Kunstszene in DUMBO ermöglicht, aber auch die Ansiedlung von Technologieunternehmen.
