Auf Elsässisch bedeutet „Dolder“ „höchster Punkt, Gipfel“. Mit seiner Höhe von 25 Metern bedrohte dieser Turm den Feind mit der kahlen und kriegerischen Erscheinung seiner Außenfassade, während die der Stadt zugewandte Innenfassade seit dem 16. Jahrhundert den Blick der Einwohner mit der ansprechenden Anordnung ihrer Holzbalken und ihrer vier Kraggewölbe erfreute. Seine erste Ebene bildete einen der Ausgangspunkte des Patrouillenwegs, der oben auf dem Wall um die Stadt herumführte.
