What are the most popular starting points and their approximate hiking times to Malga Spora?

Malga Spora can be reached from several trailheads. The most popular routes include:

    • Andalo (via path 301 from Maso Pegorar): Approximately 3 hours.
    • Molveno: Around 4 hours.
    • Spormaggiore: About 4 hours and 45 minutes.
    • Lake Tovel: Roughly 3 hours.
    • Passo Grostè: Approximately 2 hours.

These times are estimates and can vary based on individual fitness and trail conditions.

Is Malga Spora suitable for a winter hike or is it open year-round?

Malga Spora is managed seasonally, typically from July to mid-September. During this period, it offers agritourism services, refreshments, and overnight stays. While the area is stunning in winter, the malga itself is closed, and winter hiking would require significant experience, proper gear, and awareness of avalanche risks, as it's located in a wild, isolated part of the Brenta Dolomites.

Are there any specific permits required for hiking to Malga Spora or staying overnight?

No specific hiking permits are generally required to access the trails leading to Malga Spora. However, if you plan to stay overnight in the small mattress dorm at the malga, it is essential to register and book in advance, as space is limited. You can contact the manager, Massimo Ciccolini, at +39 3392787980 or via email at massimo.ciccolini@alice.it.

What kind of accommodation is available at Malga Spora, and what should I expect?

Malga Spora offers bivouac facilities for overnight stays. This includes two dormitories with 22 sleeping spots equipped with mattresses in the attic, and a ground-floor room with tables, benches, and a stove. It's a rustic experience, and while mattresses are provided, you should bring your own blankets or sleeping bag. It's known for its family-like hospitality.

Is Malga Spora a dog-friendly destination?

While the malga itself is a working farm with numerous cows in summer, dogs are generally permitted on trails in the Brenta Dolomites. However, it's always best to keep dogs on a leash, especially around livestock and wildlife. If you plan to stay overnight, it's advisable to contact the malga directly to confirm their specific policy regarding dogs inside the sleeping areas.

What are the options for parking and public transport to reach the trailheads for Malga Spora?

Malga Spora is not accessible by car. You will need to park at one of the starting points for the hiking trails. For example, if starting from Andalo, you can find parking near Maso Pegorar. For public transport, you would typically take a bus to towns like Andalo, Molveno, or Spormaggiore, and then begin your hike from there. Specific public transport routes and schedules should be checked with local providers.

What kind of food and drinks are served at Malga Spora?

Malga Spora offers restaurant services, primarily serving cold dishes during the day. For those staying overnight, warm meals are also available. Visitors can enjoy simple but first-class home-style cooking, along with fresh, genuine local products like cheese and butter, often made on-site using traditional methods. Homemade cheese and Italian hospitality are frequently highlighted by visitors.

Are there any other refuges or points of interest accessible from Malga Spora for multi-day hikes?

Yes, Malga Spora serves as a strategic hub for accessing other well-known refuges in the Brenta Dolomites. It's a central point for numerous suggestive excursions and for those undertaking the Brenta Trek. From Malga Spora, you can connect to refuges such as Rifugio Pedrotti, Rifugio Grostè, and Rifugio Tuckett, making it an excellent base for multi-day adventures.

What wildlife might I encounter around Malga Spora?

Located in an isolated and wild part of the Brenta Dolomites, Malga Spora offers excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting. Hikers frequently report seeing marmots in the area. The surrounding forests and pastures are also home to various bird species and other alpine animals, making it a great spot for nature enthusiasts.

What should I wear and bring for a hike to Malga Spora?

Given the varied terrain and the altitude, sturdy hiking boots are essential. Layered clothing is recommended, as mountain weather can change quickly. Even in summer, a waterproof jacket and warm layers are advisable. Don't forget water, snacks, sun protection, a map, and a first-aid kit. If staying overnight, a sleeping bag or blanket is necessary, as the malga provides mattresses but not bedding.
