Embark on a difficult hike through the Regional Natural Park of Lessinia with the Cima Trappola and Malga Malera loop. This challenging route spans 4.7 miles (7.6 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 1122 feet (342 metres), taking approximately 2 hours and 49 minutes to complete. You will traverse varied terrain, including natural paths, unpaved roads, and steep sections as you ascend along ridges towards Cima Trappola. From the summit, you can enjoy expansive 360-degree panoramic views that stretch across the Carega group, the Lessini plateau, Monte Baldo, and even the distant Brenta Dolomites. The trail also winds through picturesque alpine pastures and woodlands, showcasing the park's diverse landscapes. You might even spot chamois near Cima Trappola. This hike demands good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes. If you are looking for a rewarding mountain experience, this loop offers it.
Planning your visit requires you to be prepared for a hard hike. The route features a mix of natural paths, unpaved roads, and some dirt roads, with a small section of asphalt. While some parts may feel moderate, the overall difficulty means you should have some mountain experience. The trail is generally accessible, but always check local conditions before heading out, especially regarding weather. Ensure you carry enough water and supplies for the nearly three-hour duration. The Malga Malera area also has a Rifugio, which can provide support or refreshment during your journey.
This loop is notable for several unique features that add to its appeal. Cima Trappola, the highest point in the Lessini Mountains at 1865 meters, offers unparalleled views and marks a historical border with an old marker from 1855. You will also pass by the historic Malga Malera, an original structure from the 1800s once used by shepherds. Along the ridge, you can find remnants and trenches from the First World War, adding a layer of historical interest. The route also showcases the region's unique karst landscape, including the impressive Buso del Valon, a 48-meter-deep karst well.
