The Fontaine Bartholdi is a monumental work designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the same sculptor who created the Statue of Liberty. Inaugurated in 1892, it was originally intended for Bordeaux but was eventually purchased by Lyon. It depicts France as a female figure (often called Marianne or Amphitrite) on a chariot pulled by four powerful horses, symbolizing the four great rivers of France. The fountain was classified as a historical monument in 1995 and underwent a major restoration completed in 2018.
