    Das Dorf Hoek van Holland, als Teilgemeinde von Rotterdam auch bekannt als „Rotterdam aan Zee“, entstand erst während des Baus des Nieuwe Waterweg. Der Standort des heutigen 'Zuidelijk Strandcentrum' war früher die Kaserne der Erdarbeiter, die die Aushubarbeiten für den Kanal durchführten. Nach der Fertigstellung im Jahr 1872 lebten sie weiterhin in ihrem ursprünglichen Lager und fanden Arbeit im Gartenbau oder leisteten schwere Hilfsarbeiter beim Bau des Hafens.

Es liegt in Südholland an der Hauptmündungsstelle des Rheins. Dieser Stromabschnitt des Rheins heißt aus flussgeschichtlichen Gründen hier aber Oude Maas.
