    „Seit 1837 hat die polnische Gemeinde Chicagos einen großen Beitrag zum wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Wohlergehen der Stadt geleistet. Daher war es angebracht, dem größten polnischen Astronomen, Nikolaus Kopernikus (1473 – 1543), ein Denkmal zu errichten.

    Kopernikus gilt als Vater der modernen Astronomie und stellte jahrhundertealte Überzeugungen in Frage. Er war der Pionier der Theorie, dass die Erde nicht das Zentrum des Sonnensystems sei, sondern sich stattdessen um die Sonne drehe. Seine Theorien veränderten die Wissenschaft für immer.
