The Route Camogli – Batterie – San Fruttuoso is a difficult hike through the Portofino Regional Natural Park, offering grand coastal views. You will cover 8.7 miles (14.1 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3017 feet (919 metres), taking around 6 hours and 3 minutes to complete. The trail winds through Mediterranean flora and olive groves, revealing sights like Punta Chiappa and the historic Doria Tower, all while presenting a demanding, rocky terrain with steep sections.
This challenging route is best for experienced hikers, as it involves exposed sections and slippery rocks above steep drop-offs. You will need good hiking boots with excellent grip. Be aware that parts of the trail, like the Passo del Bacio, may be temporarily closed, and it is not recommended if you suffer from vertigo. Many hikers choose to take a ferry back from San Fruttuoso, the trail's destination.
Along the way, you will encounter the Batterie, historic World War II defensive complexes with panoramic views over the Gulf of Camogli. The hike culminates at the beautiful San Fruttuoso Abbey, a Benedictine monastery from the year 1000 nestled on a small pebbly beach. For a less demanding option, an inland trail via Pietre Strette offers an alternative, though it is less spectacular.

Embark on the Route San Rocco – Punta Chiappa, a moderate hike spanning 2.5 miles (4.1 km) with an elevation gain of 751 feet (229 metres), typically taking 1 hour and 30 minutes. This trail offers a diverse experience along the Ligurian coast, blending natural beauty with historical interest. You will walk through varied terrain, from paved sections like Via Mortola to shaded paths winding past traditional Ligurian houses and olive groves. The route is famous for its spectacular panoramic views of the Gulf of Paradiso and Camogli Bay, leading you to the unique tongue of rock that extends into the sea at Punta Chiappa.
While the direct path from San Rocco to Punta Chiappa via San Nicolò is generally considered easy, the overall route is moderate, especially if you include the ascent of approximately 1,000 steps on your return to San Rocco. Some sections feature irregular or bumpy rock steps, and less traveled paths can be uneven, so good fitness and sure-footedness are recommended for these parts. The trail is well-marked within the Portofino Park, ensuring a navigable hiking experience.
Beyond its natural beauty, this trail offers a glimpse into history, descending among military positions known as "Batterie." These World War II sites, built by the Germans, include firing directions, anti-aircraft emplacements, and bunkers, many of which have been restored. You can visit the Silvio Somazzi Visitor Center to learn more about this past. The trail also passes charming small villages like Pego, Mortola, and Porto Pidocchio, and the medieval church of San Nicolò Capodimonte, which provides expansive views.
