Embark on the GTA: Rimella - Alpe Baranca Trail, a moderate hike spanning 6.0 miles (9.6 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2141 feet (653 metres). This route takes you through a changing landscape, starting from the village of Rimella and quickly leading into dense beech woods. You will follow well-trodden mule tracks that open up to flowering meadows, offering panoramic mountain views. The journey culminates at Alpe Baranca, where renovated huts provide a welcoming sight after an estimated 4 hours and 28 minutes of hiking.

Plan your adventure on this trail by starting in the charming village of Rimella, where you can usually find parking before your ascent. The route is clearly marked with red and white signs, guiding you reliably through the terrain. For the most enjoyable experience, consider hiking between June and September. During these months, the weather is typically favorable, and any snow from higher elevations will have melted, ensuring safer passage.

This trail offers a unique opportunity to explore the diverse landscapes within the Parco Naturale Alta Valsesia. As you ascend, you will encounter natural wonders like the Baranca Waterfall and the serene Lake Baranca. The path utilizes old mule tracks, some solidly built, reflecting the historical use of these mountain passages. Alpe Baranca itself serves as a crucial 'Posto Tappa', providing a destination with spectacular vistas.

Embark on a difficult 8.5-mile (13.6 km) loop tour through the Valle Baranca, climbing 3821 feet (1165 metres) over approximately 7 hours and 13 minutes. You will start on paved mule tracks along the Mastallone stream, moving through peaceful beech glades and alpine pastures like Catolino. As you ascend, the path narrows and becomes rockier, leading to the panoramic views from Colle d'Egua at 2,239 meters, where you can see the majestic Monte Rosa massif. The route also offers glimpses of the tranquil Lake Baranca and waterfalls, passing charming renovated huts at Alpe Baranca and Alpe Selle. Expect diverse terrain, transitioning from forested areas to open, rocky landscapes as you gain elevation.

This challenging hike requires very good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy shoes to complete safely. While the estimated duration is over seven hours, your actual time may vary depending on your pace and the specific route variations you choose. If you are planning a longer excursion, the Alpe Baranca Refuge and the Volpone-Sesone bivouac near Colle d'Egua offer potential stopping or overnight points. Be prepared for significant elevation gain and some technical sections along the way.

This trail is rich in history, following sections of the Great Traverse of the Alps, the Great Walser Trail, and the Via Alpina, reflecting its long-standing importance as a passage. You can also discover the poignant ruins of Villa Aprilia, near Lake Baranca, which was tragically burnt during World War II. In summer, keep an eye out for local wildlife, including grazing cows, chamois, ibex, and marmots, adding to the natural charm of the Italian Alps.
