    Auf Hodenpijl befand sich eine 1840 erbaute Pfarrkirche, die James dem Großen gewidmet war. Die Kirche wurde nach einem neoklassizistischen Entwurf des Haager Architekten Arend Roodenburg erbaut. Das dazugehörige Pfarrhaus 'de Herdershof' wurde 1872 erbaut, die dazugehörige Hauskapelle ist jedoch älter. Diese wurde 1720 gebaut, um eine Kirche zu ersetzen, die auf der anderen Seite des Kanals stand. 1963 wurde nach 120 Jahren die letzte heilige Messe im Kirchengebäude gefeiert.

    Im 13. Jahrhundert verband die Familie Hodenpijl ihren Namen mit einer Burg im Hodenpijl-Polder (heute Klaas-Engelbrechtspolder). Die Burg wurde 1351 im Haken- und Kabeljaukrieg zerstört.

    Seit 1657 gab es auf Hodenpijl, an der „Schmalseite“ des Kerkpolders, eine geheime Kirche. Pater Gerardus Schade war der erste Priester, der sich nach der Reformation hier niederließ. In dieser Kirche heiratete der Delfter Maler Johannes Vermeer im April 1653 Catharina Bolnes.
