    Eugène Larrieu, Besitzer des Château Haut-Brion, vermachte der Stadt Bordeaux nach seinem Tod im Jahr 1896 150 000 Franken MP. Die Stadt beauftragt zwei Pariser Architekten, die bereits viel im Südwesten gearbeitet haben: Édouard Bauhain und Raymond Barbaud. Letztere schlagen den Bau eines Brunnens vor, der von einer geschnitzten Gruppe, einer Allegorie der Rebe, überragt wird.
