Situated at an elevation of approximately 900 to 950 metres, this natural monument is renowned for its dark, deep waters, which are beautifully framed by dense fir and pine forests. Häufig gestellte Fragen

What are the main hiking routes around Lac des Corbeaux and their difficulty?

There are two primary hiking options. The first is a leisurely loop around the lake itself, which is about 2 km long and takes approximately 30 minutes. This path is generally flat, well-maintained, and suitable for all ages, including families with strollers. The second, more challenging option, is the ascent to the Roche du Lac viewpoint. This variant adds about an hour to the walk, requires good shoes, and is considered more strenuous due to its steeper terrain and elevation gain. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the lake from above.

Is the access road to Lac des Corbeaux open year-round, especially in winter?

No, the access road to Lac des Corbeaux is typically closed during winter months due to snow and ice conditions. This closure also affects access to the Roche du Lac trail. If you plan to visit in winter, be prepared for potentially longer walks from alternative parking areas, and always check local conditions before heading out.

Where should I park when visiting Lac des Corbeaux, given potential restrictions?

Parking directly at the lake is often restricted, especially during peak seasons or due to temporary rules. Visitors are advised to park at dedicated parking areas at the edge of La Bresse village. From there, you can access the lake via marked trails. It's always a good idea to check local signage upon arrival for the most current parking regulations.

Are there any specific permits required for activities at Lac des Corbeaux?

While no permits are required for hiking or general access to Lac des Corbeaux, if you plan to go fishing, you will need to obtain the necessary permits. These are typically required for catching trout and pike. Seasonal swimming is unsupervised and does not require a permit.

Is Lac des Corbeaux suitable for families with young children or strollers?

Yes, the main circuit around Lac des Corbeaux is very suitable for families with young children and strollers. The path is well-maintained and relatively flat, making it an easy and enjoyable walk. There are also benches around the lake for resting and picnic tables available. However, the ascent to the Roche du Lac viewpoint is not suitable for strollers and requires more robust footwear.

What is the origin of the name 'Lac des Corbeaux' (Lake of Crows)?

Despite its translation, the name 'Lac des Corbeaux' is not believed to be directly linked to the presence of crows. Two main theories exist: one suggests it comes from the dark fir trees surrounding the lake, giving the water a black appearance. The more plausible theory indicates it's a linguistic distortion of 'Lac des Courbées,' referring to the curved and steep surrounding relief of the glacial cirque.

Are there any dining options or cafes near Lac des Corbeaux?

Yes, there is a restaurant called Chalet du Lac des Corbeaux located right next to the lake. This provides a convenient spot for visitors to enjoy refreshments or a meal while taking in the scenic views.

Can I swim in Lac des Corbeaux, and is it safe?

Seasonal swimming is possible in Lac des Corbeaux, but it is unsupervised. The lake's waters are deep and can be cold, even in summer. Always exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings if you choose to swim.

What unique natural features or points of interest should I look out for?

Beyond the stunning lake itself, be sure to look for the Roche du Lac viewpoint, located 200 meters above the lake, which offers unparalleled panoramic views. The lake is also a glacial cirque, formed during the last Ice Age, and its dark, deep waters are characteristic of its glacial origin. The dense fir and pine forests surrounding the lake add to its mysterious and peaceful atmosphere.

How crowded does Lac des Corbeaux get, especially during peak season?

Lac des Corbeaux is a popular destination, especially during summer weekends and public holidays. It can get quite crowded, particularly the main lake loop. To enjoy a more tranquil experience, consider visiting early in the morning, later in the afternoon, or during weekdays outside of peak tourist season. The trail to Roche du Lac tends to be less crowded than the lake circuit.

Are dogs allowed on the trails around Lac des Corbeaux?

Generally, dogs are welcome on the trails around Lac des Corbeaux, but they should always be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the comfort of other visitors. Please remember to clean up after your pet to maintain the natural beauty of the area.
