Clayton West Circular

When I plan my hikes I sometimes have difficulty working out where I should alight from the bus. Today, I got it totally wrong!
I used the X1 from Wakefield to get to Clayton West and decided I the best place to alight would be the War Memorial. I thought I was getting off at the War Memorial but was actually halfway up the High Street. No wonder I couldn’t see the Memorial. I looked at the navigation app on my phone and decided the best way to proceed would be to walk uphill to pick up the route there. In my haste to set off I hadn’t noticed that the most sensible and easiest option would have been to walk downhill to start it as I’d initially intended at the ginnel by the Convenience Store on the High Street.
I did later find the ginnel and Millennium Green, where some rather frisky cows found me. I was surprised that cows were free to roam the Green. There was a stylised metal sculpture on the Green of a cow that I’d planned to photo, but with those cows breathing down my neck I decided to abandon the attempt.
The route is easy to follow and is varied in both terrain and environment, which makes it interesting to follow. Terrain varies from footpaths through woods and across fields, farm tracks and asphalt. There are a few times when the path goes straight across an arable field; in a couple of fields, the crop had been harvested, but in another the corn was still growing.
I think the route can be shortened and made easier by walking up Bilham Road to join the route by Brendon House: that cuts off the long climb up Back Lane and avoids frisky cows in Millennium Green.
The stretch of the tour that I enjoyed the most was the part from Church Lane to Bank End Lane, where a wide path runs flat next to a drystone wall that itself forms the boundary to a wood.
There are twelve normal stile and two wall stiles along the route, one of the wall stiles being particularly high.
