Ringkøbing Fjord was originally a sea bay that was gradually cut off from the North Sea by isthmus that grew due to siltation from the south and north.
When Nyminde Strøm created the opening between Ringkøbing Fjord and the North Sea in the 19th century, one of the most important fishing grounds developed south of the Limfjord.
In 1931 the canal at Hvide Sande was opened and fishing moved here.
