The German-German Open Air Museum was founded in 2003 with the participation of numerous non-material partners on the Thuringian-Bavarian border. The core area of the Freilandmuseum is the reminder and memorial site near Behrungen / Thuringia, which was created in 1999/2000, and a former border information point with lookout tower in Rappershausen / Bavaria. All sections of the Freilandmuseum are located in the former border section 44.
