Status 2024: The actual boardwalk is closed since 2022… You can walk a few meters in, but will eventually reach a dead end. Also, the actual trail is not really maintained and overgrown. Very sad, since this used to be a very nice walk.

The Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk is located on the Trans-Canada Highway northeast of Revelstoke. In 2018, our walk on the boardwalk leads through the wetland west of the Illecillewaet River. The area is part of Mount Revelstoke National Park. The flora of the wetland is dominated by the skunk cabbage plant; Symplocarpus foetidus is a plant species within the Araceae family.
The boardwalk was temporarily closed for safety reasons; a section of the trail was reopened and made accessible in 2024.

About 28 kilometers east of the town of Revelstoke is located right on the Trans-Canada Highway on the right hand side of the Skunk Cabbage picnic area. From here you can explore the swampy area on a 1.2 kilometer nature trail on planks. If you stop by at the end of August / beginning of September, you can discover the namesake of the full-size trail. Everywhere are large skunk cabbage plants (Arum family) whose leaves can easily reach 70 centimeters and exude a smell that is actually reminiscent of skunk.
