During the 1st World War in Tanganika, General von Letow-Vorbeck managed to organise a very effective military action action using mainly guerrillas and local troops to even conquer parts of Kenya, Uganda and Mozambique. At the 4 of the war, the German colony was transferred mainly to the United Kingdom and some small parts to Portugal.

You can take a break here between the MTB trails on the Schwarzen Au and the Bille.
The 'German East African Cenotaph', a safari-romantic representation of the colonial era, is today hidden in the park of the Waldesruh restaurant in Hamburg-Aumühle.
Originally, the monument was to be erected in Potsdam in the 1930s, where it was rejected due to the poor artistic quality. Then a location in Düsseldorf was considered. In the Second World War, the installation in a public place was omitted.
Paul v. Lettow-Vorbeck has personally campaigned for the current location.
