The impressive Aachen Cathedral in its present form is the result of many centuries of development and change in the city and the region. In the 8th century, the cornerstone of the Aachen Royal Palace was laid on a former Roman thermal complex. From the Carolingian Palatine Chapel, the building changed over time to the Minster Church and then on to today's Bishop's Cathedral. In the period from 936 to 1531, the Minster Church was the burial place of Charlemagne, and was even the central place of the Roman-German kingdom.

The Aachen Cathedral Treasury is the most important church treasury north of the Alps.

The treasures almost completely reflect the art epochs from the early Middle Ages to modern times. Their meaning is closely linked to the purpose they originally served: the furnishing of the Marienkirche founded by Charlemagne and the celebration of its liturgy.
