The church is a striking structure, completed in 1872, and is known as the "Iron Cathedral" because of its iron framework designed to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes.
Due to the destruction of its predecessor in the 1843 earthquake, the new building was constructed with a robust metal structure (iron framework) inspired by Gustave Eiffel.
