They are also commonly called "long-necked women" or "giraffe women." The heavy brass rings extend from the collarbone to the chin, creating the optical illusion of an elongated neck—the older the wearer, the longer the neck appears. Numerous stories exist about why these women subject themselves to this ordeal.
