Just a few years ago, cyclists reported having to ride this route through the jungle to the Laotian border, with no settlements or anything similar for a long time. Now, the land on both sides of the road has been cleared, and small fields have been created. Those who do the dirty work for large landowners live in the impoverished, hastily constructed huts. They are allowed to stay here for the first few years during the land reclamation process, until the land is ready for exploitation. Then they have to move on. An ecological and human catastrophe.
