The history of this place is horrifying: in this extermination camp, the Nazis murdered approximately 450,000 people, mostly Jews, between March and December 1942. Today, it houses a museum and memorial dedicated to those who perished here. The mood is appropriately mournful for this particularly dark part of European history.
