As an "eternal sign of gratitude for the blessed founder and loyalty to the ruling house", the laying of the foundation stone for the monument to "Old Fritz" took place on Whitsunday on May 31, 1903, on the 150th anniversary of Friedrichshagen. The monument was to be built with donations. Wilhelm II approved the construction after the model by the Gladenbeck sculptor Felix Görling was exhibited in Berlin Castle.

The long, open skirt with rich silk embroidery, a faithful reproduction of the historical blue silk skirt, gives the figure a sculpturally rounded design, the taut, upright posture shows the victor of Hohenfriedberg without putting the soldierly aspect in the foreground, rather the gaze directed into the distance is reminiscent of the philosopher of Sanssouci, who, concerned about the welfare of his country, founded a new cultural center here and, in full awareness of the position of power he had acquired for the state, thought from now on to live in peace and do as much good as he could."
