The church's history dates back to 1190 with a hospital foundation by Bishop Otto II of Bamberg. It evolved into a collegiate monastery in 1418 and later a provostry. Despite setbacks like a fire in 1502 and its collegiate status being abolished in 1807, it underwent significant Baroque reconstruction between 1714 and 1730, and extensive restorations in the 20th century, making it a testament to centuries of religious and artistic evolution.
The church is renowned for its harmonious Baroque interior. Key features include the elegant façade with stone statues by Severin Träxl and Josef Hochedlinger, serene colors and superb stucco pilasters by Domenico Antonio Carlone, and masterful frescoes in the presbytery by Bartolomeo Altomonte. The custom-built final grid by Andreas Ferdinand Lindemayr is also celebrated as one of Austria's most beautiful ironworks, contributing to its designation as a 'total work of art'.
