Csővár Castle, stands on a limestone hill in the Cserhát Mountains of Pest County. It was likely built in the late 13th century, after the Mongol invasion, by the Csői and Nézsai noble families as part of a regional defense network. The castle was first mentioned in 1319, when King Charles Robert took it from its rebellious owners and granted it to Dezső Elefánti. Soon after, it was destroyed during the conflicts involving the powerful oligarch Csák Máté. Rebuilt in the 15th century by Ráskay Balázs, royal treasurer, it became more of a fortified residence than a military stronghold.
