It used to be a chapel, which gave the town its name. Chapel = Kapell = Kappeln.
Today, there is a beautiful large church which bears the name of the patron saint of sailors, namely St. Nicholas.

The Kappler wanted to build a church larger than the cathedral to Schleswig. That was forbidden to the Kapplern by the bishop in Schleswig. 😔 But you knew how to help yourself. One built a church with more places than the cathedral. That's why two galleries were installed. So the church can accommodate about 1400 people. 😊

The chapel was renovated in the 13th century by fishermen and sailors. According to tradition, it was long, narrow and had many vaults. In the 18th century, it had to be demolished because it was dilapidated. It was rebuilt from 1793 to 1798 by the state master builder Johann Adam Richter in the style of the late Baroque.
