The eastern end of the Südfeld-Hohenwarthe Mittelland Canal posture is formed by the Hohenwarte double lock, by means of which the ships are channeled down around 18.50 meters into the Elbe-Havel Canal. Since the capacity of only one lock chamber would not be sufficient for the expected ship operation, a double lock was built. In addition, the lock system was designed as an energy-saving lock to reduce water consumption and the cost of pumping back the process water.
