In 1285 the Archbishop Friedrich III. from Saarwerden demolish a castle that the Jülich counts had illegally built and instead build the Zülpicher castle with its mighty round towers.
The present castle dates from the 14./15. Century and is integrated into the city wall Zülpichs. Also well preserved are the four city gates: Münstertor, Bachtor, Kölntor, Weiertor.
They are part of the largely restored Wall Ring, which surrounds the historic center of Zülpich.

The Zülpich is a landmark of the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Zülpich, whose origins are to be found in a Roman "castrum". The present complex was built at the end of the 14th century as a symbol of sovereignty and outpost of the Cologne archbishops against the then county Jülich.
