As early as the 15th century there was a small reservoir in the Ostergrund in the area of today's Osterteich. In connection with mining in the area, it served as a drive for a stamp mill for crushing minerals and metals. In 1669, today's Osterteich was created by building a dam in order to operate a stronger hammer mill. Work had begun in 1668 and was finally completed in 1671.
