The Noordede is a medieval drainage canal in the polder landscape.
Its origins date back to the early period of coastal plain reclamation around the 10th-11th century. Reclamation, dike construction, and drainage canals form a coherent whole, because without reclamation, humans could not intensively cultivate the land reclaimed from the sea, and without a well-designed system of drainage canals, they could not protect the land from rainwater runoff.
