The new fish ladder ensures that the Gera River is now passable for fish upstream, making the weir more ecologically permeable and promoting biodiversity.
It is a basin fish ladder: several basins arranged in series with small differences in height, connected by loopholes or channels. This design allows fish to ascend and descend effectively through a controlled flow. Approximately 160 meters of the fish ladder are publicly published.
The previous fish ladder at the same location was considered virtually ineffective in specialist literature; the new fish ladder replaces this deficient structure.
