A brief splash of sunlight through the heavy cloud lights up Foel Ddu and some of the upper slate workings above Cwmorthin, as seen from the northern end of Cnicht. In slate country in North Wales the landscape is scarred by huge rubble piles, big holes in the ground and ruined buildings, something that modern mining companies could not get away with as they have to clear up the mess afterwards. On a day like this it is also easy to see just how hard working life must have been for the slate miners, both above and below ground.
