In 1913 the foundation stone was laid for the construction of the church. Behind the church there is a cemetery with a cemetery chapel laid out in geometric shapes. (A rarity at the time).

The church was built in 1913/14 in the center of the Gartenstadt miners' settlement. Church and parish were named after the reformer Martin Luther.
