The sculptures are inspired by a local 18th-century legend. According to the tale, a massive whale appeared near Rewal's beach, and its skeleton was eventually transported to a church in Trzęsacz. This unique folklore led Rewal authorities to commemorate the legend and establish whales as a symbol for the commune.
While the monument is accessible year-round, visiting in winter offers a different experience. The square might be less crowded, providing a tranquil atmosphere. However, be prepared for colder coastal weather. The illuminated fountain and artificial stream may not be operational, but the sculptures themselves remain an impressive sight against the winter Baltic Sea backdrop.
The two large skeletal whale sculptures are named Ventus (Wind) and Fluctus (Wave). They are crafted from specially reinforced steel to withstand the coastal weather conditions.
Children are often captivated by the massive size of the whale skeletons, making for great photo opportunities. The square itself is a pleasant public space with granite paving and a modern fountain, offering a safe area for families to stroll. The nearby viewing platform also provides engaging sea views.

Rewal itself is known for its beautiful beaches and coastal paths. You can also explore other unique places like the ruins of the church in Trzęsacz, which are just a short distance away.
Most visitors find that 30 minutes to an hour is sufficient to appreciate the sculptures, take photos, and enjoy the ambiance of Whale Square and the nearby viewing platform. If you plan to combine it with a stroll along the beach or a meal at a nearby restaurant, you might extend your visit.
Yes, the Whale Sculptures are a key landmark along the Baltic Sea coast, and numerous Rewal tourist trails and coastal paths lead to or pass by Whale Square. These paths are generally suitable for leisurely walks, hiking, and cycling, offering scenic views of the sea and the surrounding area.
