The rocks are not far from the path. A very nice big stone grave. One of the gigantic cover plates is broken. A blackboard gives information about the background.

This is a Neolithic megalithic grave with the dimensions 8x1,80m. It is located in a small forest near a dirt road.
The original layout of the Großsteingrabes is still relatively well recognizable, although some boulders have not received in original position. The strange name 'Schmeersteine' is based on the popular belief that fat and butter (flat German: Schmeer) had been sacrificed there some time ago.

The Schmeersteine megalithic tomb bears the Sprockhoff number 977 and was built in the Neolithic period between 3500 and 2800 BC as a megalithic structure of the Funnel Beaker Culture (TBK). Neolithic monuments are an expression of the culture and ideology of Neolithic societies. Their creation and function are considered to be a hallmark of social development.

For me, the Schmeersteine are one of the most beautiful and magical stone tombs.
