In 1855, the appearance of Villers Abbey was drastically altered by the construction of a railway line on a viaduct. The railway line was built through the site without any consideration for its architectural and historical importance and it destroyed the view of the terraced gardens that had been laid out behind the abbey palace.
Nevertheless, the train offers travellers a romantic and picturesque view of the abbey. Its arrival was very beneficial for the tourist development of the region and the Cistercian abbey.
