These dovecotes are ubiquitous in central Portugal, but are particularly numerous here. They can be visited with or without a guide (more information at the local office of the NGO Palombar, palombar.pt). They are historically present in the landscape. Originally, pigeons were bred for food and their manure was used for agriculture. Owning a dovecote was also a sign of wealth. Recently, the dovecotes have been restored and have an ecological function, with the pigeons taking a place in the food chain (prey for birds of prey, which are being reintroduced).
