Altopascio (town of 15,000 inhabitants) has been inhabited since Roman times and became more important in the Middle Ages through its Spedale (inn, first mentioned in 1084) for the pilgrims traveling on the Via Francigena, which led from France to Rome . This formed the basis of the later Order of Saint James of Altopascio.
Altopascio is also known as the “city of bread” because of its centuries-old tradition of grain cultivation.

The historic center of Altopascio, in the shape of an irregular triangle and enclosed by walls parts of which and the three gates remain, corresponds to the medieval hospital and gives an eloquent idea of the dimensions it reached. The three squares of different sizes that open onto it correspond to as many courtyards, around which the functional structures were distributed, unfortunately largely transformed when the complex eventually became a farm and an agricultural village.
