The first-category Col du Grand Ballon is an iconic climb in the Vosges Mountains. The 21-kilometer climb, averaging 5.3%, is divided into two sections: the first, up to Col Amic, is longer and less steep, with a respite towards the end; and the final, steeper kilometers to the summit, which can reach 9%.

The average is a bit biased due to the split of the climb with the descent after the Hartmannswillerkopf. It is indeed a great feeling to have reached the top. However, you will find yourself sharing the road with a lot of motorized traffic, specifically plenty of motorcylce-groups. Don't forget to enjoy the view once in a while ;)
