The mural in Wittenberge depicts a statue of the Virgin Mary holding a sewing machine. The word “Veritas” beats in her heart. In Roman mythology, Veritas is the goddess of truth, but in Wittenberge, this name is associated with the rich industrial history of the sewing machine factory of the same name. The factory is now history, and the painful dismantling of local industry is also part of the story. The mural represents all aspects of this development: memory and hope are held in balance.
