The Schauenburg, or the Schauenburgberg is a historically significant place for the early medieval development of the Thuringian countryside. It was the ancestral seat of the Ludowinger family. From here, the Ludowinger family ruled Thuringia, which was still fragmented at the time, as well as parts of Hesse and was able to bring large parts of Thuringia under its control.
