The lighthouse was built in 1881 under Portuguese rule and named after the Portuguese Queen Maria Pia of Savoy. The lighthouse is a popular tourist destination near Praia, and an old cannon is on display on the grounds. Santa Maria, located on the island of Sal, is a well-known seaside resort and tourist center with long sandy beaches and turquoise waters. It's important not to confuse the two places, as the lighthouse is located on Santiago, while Santa Maria is on Sal.
