Cykling

The castle church is a building and cultural monument of special rank. It was built around 1150 at the highest point of the city Varel instead of a small wooden building made of natural stone. After 1650 it became part of a castle built by the Varel Counts. The count's family used their own chapel in the castle building, but also had a stalls and a funeral tomb in the church. The castle buildings were demolished in 1870 after a prolonged fire.

The broad, squat-looking tower was supplemented in the first half of the 13th century as a Romanesque westwork with a double tower. After the upper parts of the tower were destroyed, they were not rebuilt, but the remaining hulls were only brought together under one roof in the 18th century to their present form. Inside and from the east you can still see the two tower stumps in which the five church bells are ringing. (Source: Evangelical Lutheran parish of Varel)
