The obelisk is the oldest monument (1827) in Quebec City and the second oldest war memorial in Canada. It was created by John Phillips and the architect John Crawford Young.
Louis-Joseph de Montcalm was the commander of the French troops in the Seven Years' War, James Wolfe was Major General of the British troops in the same war.
The monument is one of the few that unites the victor and the conqueror.
