The Hildburghausen–Lindenau-Friedrichshall railway line, also known as the Hildburghausen-Heldburg Railway, was a narrow-gauge railway (meter gauge) just under 30 kilometers long, connecting Hildburghausen with the Heldburg region to the south. The section from Hildburghausen to Heldburg was ceremonially opened on July 1, 1888. The remaining section to Lindenau-Friedrichshall was put into operation on December 1. The entire railway became Prussian state property on July 16, 1895. From 1920 onward, it was part of the German Reichsbahn network and belonged to the Erfurt Reichsbahn Directorate.
