Despite being a steep street, Ramsay Lane was historically important in the 1700s and 1800s, as it acted as a bridge between the Old and New Towns.
These days, it’s just a stone’s throw from some of the capital’s most famous buildings, so there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself walking along it at some point.
While its gradient is a challenge in itself, the twisting cobblestones and towering staircases also add an extra dimension. So it’s probably best to leave your high heels at home if you’re planning to walk along it.

The man-made hill dating back to the 1700s is located on the Mound in the city centre. Despite it being steep, historically Ramsay Lane was very important in the 1700s and 1800s as it acted as a bridge between the Old and New Towns.
