The market church of the Holy Spirit in Clausthal was built in the middle of the Thirty Years' War from oak and spruce and the roof was covered with lead. In 1642 it was consecrated at Pentecost. The Market Church is the second largest preserved wooden church in Europe after Kerimäki Church. A very extensive renovation was completed in 2011.

An imposing church. Germany's largest wooden church. 57m long and 36m wide, made only of spruce and oak. Absolutely impressive. The church is said to have had more than 2,200 seats in the past and still seats 1,500 today. It was built in 1642 after its predecessor fell victim to a fire. 1698 was grown to its present size. The blue paint was chosen because blue was considered the color of the Holy Spirit.
