The oldest written references found about Quinta do Gradil date back to the end of the 15th century, in a royal document from D. João II dated February 14, 1492.
In the 16th century, the Quinta do Gradil, the king's hunting ground, was home to a vast array of fauna and flora. Deer, partridges, hares, rabbits, foxes and stags were common.
In the 17th century, Quinta do Gradil was used for farming. The wine was natural, very close to its original definition: fermented grape must. There was no technology or added sulphites.
